How Do Vaporizers Work?
A vaporizer is an device that heats your herbs with steam or vapor from water. It is consider a natural health tool for aromatherapy and can be used where smoking is not allowed.
Vaping works differently than smoking. When you vape, your herbs are heated in a vaporizer, which warms them through a heating element. This is different than smoking, which burns herbs with a direct flame.
With smoking, the flame heat can go up to 1200 degrees Fahrenheit. This high heat causes the herb to possibly release carcinogenic material.
If you choose to vape, you can bypass as much as 95 percent of the carcinogenic material. The reason is this: Vaporizers heat your herbs and essential oils up to about 400 degrees Fahrenheit, which is hot enough to turn the active chemicals into vapor.
There are a few different ways to use vaporizers to heat your herbs. Two methods involve the a direct/conduction heating method or indirect/convectional heating method.
Direct/conduction heating method: This method is a classic. It involves placing your dry herbs on a metal plate or screen and heating them to the correct temp. This method is not as good as the indirect method, though. Remember, with the direct method, your herbs still contact direct heat.
One issue is when you put the herbs on the heating element. They can sometimes generate a smell of something burning. (You might even get that burnt popcorn taste.) On the same token, you may find that direct heating vaporizer may not even heat the herbs all the way, which can be a waste and is not efficient.
Indirect/convectional heating method: This method is best for vaping, I think. Your herbs or essential oils never come near a heating element. Instead, the hot air passes over the herb and heats it that way.
The indirect method is more even when it comes to heating herbs, which is a big benefit. It means that you are efficiently heating your herb and nothing is going to waste.
There are many different vaporizer styles -- pocket vaporizers -- or full sized units -- and it is important to determine how the vapor is delivered. There are two ways --stored or direct lung vapor delivery.
Stored vapor delivery: This method involves storing the vapor in a glass dome or bag that looks like a balloon after it is heated.
Direct vapor delivery: This method involves sending the vapor to the lungs after the herbs are heating. You are not limited to storing it and it provides a cleaner, fresher taste than stored vapor.
